The show was set in both 1600s Spain and a modern day coffee shop, so the general idea for my design was to make the set appear like a coffee shop, but hidden fantastical elements would pop up occasionally to bring a whimsical and dream-like feeling to the audience.
Examples of special design elements include:
Several trapdoors in the floor to have props magically appear from within, including a campfire and rocks.
A turntable centerstage cleverly disguised as a rug used as a treadmill in order to simulate the main characters riding horses.
A murphy bed hidden seamlessly in the wall behind the chalkboard menu.

My Ground Plan - Developed in Vectorworks with stock book flats, modified for this production. Original design by Alex Houfle.
I even designed a faux neon sign for the radio station! Made from a small LED strip on a wooden board.

I took the photos of the cast that we already had, photoshopped them to look as if the images were drawn, printed them, and glued them to wooden boards for a brilliant A Chorus Line reference while still respecting the time period of the show.
In addition to designing sets, I also have a passion for graphic design. This is my design for our production of The Quest for Don Quixote at Florida Southern College. This poster was chosen from 12 candidates to be the official poster for the show!
I painted and lettered both sides of this sign, then lashed them together using rope in order to have it appear as a wearable sandwich board sign, while still having it capable of free-standing.
Here, we have several elements that I worked on during the production, including the rack that I assisted construction on, the torture chair that I modified, and the yellow bird in Wednesday’s hand that I designed to have its neck broken and be reset easily.
I designed Pugsley’s “monster under the bed” puppet to look like a Gila Monster. It consisted of two arms and a tail. The puppet was manipulated by two crew members underneath the bed, giving the monster the appearance of movement.
I designed the set decorations, furniture, and various props for this production.
For the song The Moon and Me, I designed a moon made out of plywood, which was then painted with a moon texture. I then suspended it from the grid via a pulley, so it could dance up and down with Fester during the song.
I designed and modified an addition to our barber chair from Sweeny Todd we retained from years prior. It consisted of a metal spike installed in the base of the chair, and a hole drilled in the seat. When the seat dropped, the spike went up through the hole, giving the illusion of it popping up. Otherwise, the seat was completely safe to sit in while in locked position.
I added trim to the carts we already had, and arranged materials such as fruit, veggies, and linens in the cart for the actors to “sell”.
